In many traditions throughout history, walking a labyrinth often substituted for an actual pilgrimage to a sacred site. Labyrinths have been used in many cultures and religions: Celtic, Christian, Greek, Muslim, and the First Nation peoples of North and South America.
As a metaphor for life, the labyrinth has many twists and turns, early turns toward the center, and long walks along the periphery before unexpectedly opening to the center.
